In a Proactive Health Care consult with Dr Boyd, we don’t ask how we can make your sick pet better; we ask what can we do to help your best friend live a long and vital life. Focussing on prevention isn’t limited to vaccinations and parasite treatments. Proactive health care goes much deeper than what time allows during a routine wellness appointment and may utilize a wide array of allied pet professionals such as dog trainers, chiropractors, massage therapists and nutritionalists. Proactive health care also allows us to go beyond the scope of western (allopathic) medicine to incorporate an Eastern philosophy of living life in harmony with the earth... balancing yin and yang, the body and the spirit, from birth to aged and throughout the changing seasons. Dr Peter Dobias, a well-respected colleague in the holistic community, has said “You don’t need to be a veterinarian to be your pet’s best healer - you only need to know how to make the right decisions.” There is a wealth of knowledge on how to live a long and healthy life. Just ask Dr Google. The internet is filled with information about best diet, the latest supplement and newest technologies which will cure all our ills and extend our life. But how do we make those ‘right decisions’? It all starts with an understanding of each of our pets as individuals. The Proactive Health Care consultation will begin with understanding your pet’s intrinsic nature and vulnerabilities. We also need to discover your preferences, biases and desires, whether entirely holistic or strictly scientifically based. We will provide you with an overview of valid systems of eastern and western medicine, from the latest in Multiplex Genetic testing to the ancient Five Element Theory. Then armed with these parameters we can set a course to start you and your companion on the path to wellness and longevity.
